Dec Challenge - Have yourselves a very Kai Tak Christmas (VHHX)

Compass has decided to do something a little bit different from the usual big monthly event this year.

We invite all members of the VATPAC and VATNZ communities to join with us for a new concept, the Compass Monthly Challenge. Each month the Compass management team will choose an airport somewhere around the world. They'll all be challenging. We will even make it a bit harder from time to time by adding extra dimensions to the challenge (like make sure the ceiling is down to 100' and there is a big crosswind)

There will be no set date to complete the challenge, you're free to fly it on any day that month, you can even have multiple cracks at it. Anyone can take part and then simply upload your screen shots and FS videos of your efforts to the Compass forums (there is a special Monthly Challenge forum in the events section). You don't have to be a Compass pilot, it's open to all. We'll have open voting on which is the best shot and video. As promised in December we do the grand daddy of difficult approaches - the Chequerboard IGS approach to Hong Kong Kai Tak!

CADS is Here!!!

As part of our 7th birthday celebrations today we unveil CADS, the Compass Automated Dispatch System. This system has been in closed development and testing for the past two and a half months and realises a long held dream for us to have a sophisticated flight generation system.

After many attempts to find a developer who could build us a sophisticated flight generation, PIREP and ACARS system we finally decided that the only option left to us was to throw caution to the wind and see what we could develop ourselves. The system has been undergoing behind the scenes testing by the management team, assisted by our Senior Captains.

At the heart of CADS is a database of all our flights, and a wealth of operational data on all the sectors we fly or are likely to fly and on the capabilities of our aircraft. The entry portal to the system is the current schedules page, in addition there is a link to CADS on the sidebar menu on every page. Here you will find a new form that allows you to search the schedules based on a variety of criteria. Once your search is made you will be presented with all the flights in the schedule that match.

This is where the real advance in CADS lies. Once you have selected your flight you then have the option of proceeding to the new automated dispatch system. To use the dispatch portion of the system you must be a registered Compass pilot and you will be required to enter your Compass Pilot ID and password, the same ones you use for the PIREP system. You then can confirm your flight details and the system will then assign you an aircraft from the fleet, give you the timings of the flight and generate realistic crew, passenger and cargo loads. It will give you the company preferred route, advise if a flex track is an option for your selected flight and even give you the remarks section for your flight plan. You can then print out a detailed dispatch sheet for reference during further flight planning and the system has had some basic smarts built into it so that two Compass pilots are not flying the same aircraft at the same time.

The system is now functional and useful, but we still hope to develop it further. We welcome your opinions as we try and make it even better. Please enjoy CADS, we think it will make your online flying experience with Compass even better.

VATPAC Monthly Awards

VATPAC have instituted a number of monthly awards for the pilot and VA of the month.  To be eligible you need to be participating in a VATPAC event, the scores will be calculated by stats on VATAware

You need to nominate to the Director of Pilot Services and if you want to represent your VA then you must include your VA details as well.

I reckon we should make sure we're VA of the month every month, and the pilot of the month comes from within our ranks.  The first calendar event is tonight in Melbourne, lget those nominations in and lets see you all there.

Operations Manual

Compass is proud to release our long awaited Operations Manual. This document has been a long time coming but it is finally at a stage where it can be made available to the Compass community. It covers all the basics that our crews require to conduct their day to day operations. The breadth of knowledge it covers is remarkable from the very basics all the way up to such things as preferred alternates during prolonged over ocean flights, fuel reserve policy, stable approaches, QFE operations in Russian and Chinese airspace, and much much more. All in all, 64 pages of quality material that no Compass pilot can afford to do without. You can find the manual on our Manuals Page.
